Effect of Salinity and Nitrogen Form in Irrigation Water on Growth, Antioxidants and Fatty Acids Profiles in Halophytes Salsola australis, Suaeda maritima, and Enchylaena tomentosa for a Perspective of Biosaline Agriculture ArchiMer
Certain, Cassandre; Della Patrona, Luc; Gunkel-grillon, Peggy; Leopold, Audrey; Soudant, Philippe; Le Grand, Fabienne.
Cultivation of salt-tolerant crops help to face to irreversible global salinization of freshwater and soils. In New-Caledonia, three halophytes are candidates for saline crops, Salsola australis R.Br., Suaeda maritima (L.) Dumort and Enchylaena tomentosa R.Br. Their success and quality depend yet on availabilities of salinity and essential nutrients in agrosystems. So, we investigated effects of three salinities, i.e., control moderate and high, and five nitrogen ratios, i.e., 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 or 0:100 NO3−-N:NH4+-N ratio on their growth and functional value for fatty acids and antioxidants. Results show that the leaf fatty acid and antioxidant profiles of species, emphasize their good potential to become functional crop products, based on...

Fluorescence of chlorophyll a and photosynthetic pigments in Atriplex nummularia under abiotic stresses AGRIAMBI
Melo,Hidelblandi F. de; Souza,Edivan R. de; Cunha,Jailson C..
ABSTRACT Chlorophyll a fluorescence is a very useful tool in ecophysiological studies to analyze the photosynthetic performance of plants under biotic and abiotic stresses. This research aimed to evaluate the parameters of the fluorescence of chlorophyll a, contents of chlorophyll a, b and total, and carotenoids in Atriplex nummularia cultivated under water stress (37 and 70% of field capacity) and salt stress (irrigation water with electrical conductivity of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 dS m-1), besides two sources of salts: NaCl and a mixture of salts of Ca2+, Mg+2, K+, Na+ and Cl-, in a 6 x 2 x 2 factorial, with 4 replicates, totaling 96 experimental plots. At 91 days after transplanting, the initial fluorescence (F0), maximum fluorescence (Fm), potential...

Germination responses of Lycium humile, an extreme halophytic Solanaceae: understanding its distribution in saline mudflats of the southern Puna Acta Botanica
Palchetti,María Virginia; Llanes,Analía; Reginato,Mariana; Barboza,Gloria; Luna,Virginia; Cantero,Juan José.
ABSTRACT Although knowledge about halophytic Solanaceae is scarce, it is known that several species within genus Lycium tolerate salinity. Lycium humile grows in highly saline soils in mudflats near saline Andean lakes. This study evaluated the germination responses of L. humile under different scarification methods, photoperiods, temperatures and saline conditions and, simultaneously, tested seedling survival under different iso-osmotic conditions. Dormancy and germination were found to be regulated by interactions with different factors, with the highest germination percentages being obtained by immersion in sulfuric acid, with a temperature of 25 °C and a temperature regime of 5/25 °C, under which seeds were neutrally photoblastic. As osmotic potential...

Maternal habitat affects germination requirements of Anabasis setifera, a succulent shrub of the Arabian deserts Acta Botanica
El-Keblawy,Ali; Gairola,Sanjay; Bhatt,Arvind.
The effects of maternal habitat on light and temperature requirements during germination were assessed for the succulent desert shrub Anabasis setifera. Seeds were collected from the Mediterranean habitats of Egypt and the hyper-arid subtropical habitats of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Seeds from the two populations were germinated in three temperature treatments in both a light/dark regime and continuous darkness. Seeds from the Egyptian population germinated significantly greater and faster than those of UAE. Seeds stored for four months at room temperatures have little dormancy and germinate at wide range of temperatures and light conditions, but seeds stored four months in the natural habitat lost their ability to germinate and rotted 10 days after...

Phytodesalination of a moderately saline soil combined with two inorganic amendments Bragantia
Lastiri-Hernández,Marcos Alfonso; Alvarez-Bernal,Dioselina; Bermúdez-Torres,Kalina; Cárdenas,Gustavo Cruz; Ceja-Torres,Luis Fernando.
ABSTRACT The shortage of water and the increasing salinity are the main limiting environmental factors that directly affect the establishment and the development of crops. In this research, phytodesalination capacity of Sesuvium verrucosum was evaluated alone and in combination with agricultural gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) and Polisul-C, in order to remedy a moderately saline soil at greenhouse level and under nonleaching conditions. The treatments studied were the following: T1 (soil), T2 (soil + S. verrucosum), T3 (soil +S. verrucosum + Polisul-C), T4 (soil + S. verrucosum + CaSO4·2H2O). Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubes filled with 8 kg of clay soil with an electrical conductivity of the saturation paste extract (ECe) of6.21 dS.m-1 were used. Soil samples were...

SALT TOLERANT PLANTS AS A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION IN ARID AND SALINE COASTAL ZONES Acta biol.Colomb.
HOLGUIN PEÑA,Ramón Jaime; MEDINA HERNÁNDEZ,Diana; GHASEMI,Mojtaba; RUEDA PUENTE,Edgar Omar.
ABSTRACT This review focuses on the potential of halophytes for food, fodder and biofuels production, as well as their impacts on the environment and societies. Moreover, to open new areas in production systems using novel technologies such as halophytes in a desert agriculture. We are faced with the crisis and the shortage of freshwater in arid, semi-arid and desert regions. For this reason, we have to apply sustainable systems for human food, fodder and biofuels. Halophytes are naturally resistant to salt and develop on the coastal coast and arid-saline areas. We present a complete summary of the current situation of human population growth and food demand, a sustainable alternative such as halophilic crops of agro-industrial importance compared with...
